Ansa vs Chatbase: which AI support chatbot suits a small business?

Ansa vs Chatbase compared for small businesses: pricing, free plans, setup, WhatsApp, answer accuracy and what happens when you run out of messages.

Short answer: Chatbase is a powerful AI agent builder with lots of integrations, a choice of AI models and actions like booking meetings, so it suits businesses that want to build and connect a lot. Ansa is simpler and cheaper: a fixed monthly price, a free plan, answers only from your own information, and a hard limit that pauses politely instead of charging you more. It also has a few built-in actions small businesses ask for most: taking bookings, handing a customer to you by email and looking up order status. If you mainly need your customers' everyday questions answered on your website and WhatsApp, Ansa is the easier fit. If you need deep integrations or custom actions, Chatbase does more.

Chatbase's prices and features below were checked on its official pages on 20 October 2026. Prices change often, so treat them as correct at the time of writing and check the sources before you decide.

How much does Chatbase cost compared with Ansa?

At the time of writing, Chatbase's pricing page lists three self-serve plans, each with a 20% discount for paying yearly:

  • Hobby: $40 a month ($32 billed yearly), 700 message credits a month, 1 AI agent, 2 members.
  • Standard: $150 a month ($120 billed yearly), 4,000 message credits a month, 3 members, plus its helpdesk inbox, API access and integrations such as Zendesk, HubSpot and Zapier.
  • Pro: $500 a month ($400 billed yearly), 15,000 message credits a month, 5 members and advanced analytics.

Enterprise is custom-priced. Add-ons include extra credits ($40 per 1,000), extra agents ($300 per agent a year), extra storage ($300 per 10 MB a year) and removing "Powered By Chatbase" ($1,188 a year).

One thing to understand is how credits work. Chatbase's pricing FAQ says each request to the AI model costs a number of credits that depends on the model you choose, and that an agent using actions may make more than one request for a single reply. So 700 credits isn't always 700 replies.

Ansa keeps it simpler. Each reply counts as one answer, and you pay the plan price and nothing more:

  • Free ($0): 20 answers a month, 1 MB of knowledge, up to 20 website pages per read, 5 documents, just you, 1 assistant.
  • Starter ($25 a month): 500 answers a month, 5 MB of knowledge, up to 100 website pages per read, 20 documents, 3 team seats, 1 assistant.
  • Pro ($89 a month): 2,000 answers a month, 20 MB of knowledge, up to 500 website pages per read, 50 documents, 10 team seats, 3 assistants, and you can remove “Powered by Ansa”.
  • Business ($199 a month): 5,000 answers a month, 50 MB of knowledge, up to 1,000 website pages per read, 200 documents, 25 team seats, 10 assistants, and you can remove “Powered by Ansa”.

Prices are in US dollars, and there are no contracts. You can compare the plans side by side.

Is there a free plan?

Ansa has one. You get 20 answers a month to try it on your own website, and you don't need a card. It's enough to test with real customers before you decide.

Chatbase's pricing page doesn't list a free plan at the time of writing. Each paid plan starts with a 7-day trial.

Which is easier to set up?

Both are built for people who don't write code.

With Ansa, you sign up, type your website address and Ansa reads your pages, usually in a minute or two. You ask it a few test questions, then paste one line of code into your website builder or share your chat link. Most businesses are answering customers within ten minutes. See Set up Ansa in 10 minutes, and the guides for WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace.

Chatbase also builds an agent from your content. Its data sources documentation lists files (PDF, TXT, DOC and DOCX up to 20 MB each), websites, text, Q&A, Notion pages and support tickets, and says changes take effect on their own without retraining. Where Chatbase asks for more setup is in what it can do beyond answering: AI actions, procedures, and connections to helpdesks and other tools. That's useful if you need it, and more to configure if you don't.

How accurate are the answers?

Both tools answer from your own content rather than from the open internet.

Ansa is deliberately strict. It only answers from what you've added in Knowledge: your website, documents, text snippets and Q&A pairs. It doesn't search the internet, and it won't make up prices, dates or phone numbers. When something isn't in your knowledge, it shows your own "don't know" message and a button to contact you. Every question it couldn't answer is saved, so you can add the missing answer in one step. For anything that must be said exactly right, a Q&A pair makes Ansa reply with your answer word for word.

Chatbase gives you more control over the AI itself, including a choice of models from several AI providers listed on its pricing page. That flexibility is a plus for teams who want to fine-tune behaviour, and it's also why credit usage varies.

What happens when you hit the limit?

This is the biggest difference for a small budget.

On Ansa, you get a warning banner when you've used 80% of your answers. At 100%, the assistant pauses politely: the chat bubble is hidden from new visitors, people already chatting are asked to contact you directly, and your knowledge and settings are all kept. It switches back on at the start of next month, or straight away if you upgrade. There are no overage fees and no automatic upgrades. See What happens at your monthly limit.

Chatbase offers auto-recharge: when your credits fall below a threshold you set, it adds credits (which don't expire) at $40 per 1,000, so your agent keeps running. That's handy if you never want the bot to stop, but it means your bill can grow with demand. Its pricing page doesn't spell out what happens if you run out without auto-recharge switched on.

Which works on WhatsApp?

Both list WhatsApp. Chatbase includes WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Slack integrations from the Hobby plan, at the time of writing.

Ansa answers on your own WhatsApp Business number on Starter, Pro and Business, using the same knowledge as your website chat. Ansa doesn't add a charge for it: each reply counts as one answer, and Meta bills you directly for WhatsApp messages after its free monthly allowance. See Connect your WhatsApp number and WhatsApp costs.

If you don't have a website at all, Ansa's chat link gives you a full-page chat you can put in your Instagram bio, Google Business Profile or on a printed QR code.

What about your data?

Both say they don't use your data to train AI models. Chatbase states this on its pricing page, along with GDPR, SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA claims for its platform.

Ansa never uses your knowledge or your customers' conversations to train AI models, ours or anyone else's. Answers are written by an AI model provider in the European Union, under contracts that don't allow training, and main hosting is in the EU. See Your data is never used to train AI and What we store.

Who should choose Chatbase?

  • Teams that want their AI agent to take custom actions and run procedures beyond the booking, hand-off and order lookup Ansa has built in.
  • Businesses already on a helpdesk such as Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot or Freshdesk that want the agent connected to it (Standard plan and up at the time of writing).
  • Anyone who wants voice, email or a choice of AI models.
  • Businesses with high volumes that prefer the agent never pauses and are happy to pay for extra credits.

Who should choose Ansa?

  • Small businesses that want customers' everyday questions answered: prices, opening hours, delivery, booking and policies.
  • Anyone who wants a fixed bill with a hard limit and no surprise charges.
  • Businesses that want to start free and pay $25 a month when they're ready.
  • Owners who'd rather the assistant says "I don't know" and points to you than guesses.
  • Businesses that answer customers on WhatsApp, or have no website and want a shareable chat link.
  • Businesses with more than one brand or branch: Pro and Business include several assistants, each with its own knowledge. See Run several assistants.

Ansa doesn't do everything Chatbase does. Its actions are a fixed set: booking (a link on every plan, Google Calendar or Calendly on Pro and Business), hand-off to you by email with a chat summary on Starter, Pro and Business, and read-only order status from Shopify or Stripe on Pro and Business. You can't build your own. It has no helpdesk integrations, no voice and no shared inbox for live chat with your team: you reply to hand-offs from your own email.
