Ansa vs Intercom Fin: which AI support chatbot suits a small business?

Ansa vs Intercom Fin for small businesses: per-seat and per-outcome pricing, free plans, setup, WhatsApp, and what happens when your usage grows.

Short answer: Intercom with Fin is a full customer service platform: a shared inbox, ticketing, a help centre and an AI agent that hands conversations to your human team. It's built for support teams, and it's very good at that. Ansa is a much smaller tool for a small business that wants customers' everyday questions answered from its own information, at a fixed monthly price with a free plan. If you have a support team working an inbox all day, look at Intercom. If you're a small business without one, Ansa is simpler and cheaper.

Intercom's prices and features below were checked on its official pages on 20 October 2026. Prices change often, so treat them as correct at the time of writing and check the sources before you decide.

How much does Intercom Fin cost compared with Ansa?

At the time of writing, Intercom's pricing page has two parts: seats and usage.

Seats (per full seat, per month, shown with annual billing):

  • Essential: $29 per seat. The page also showed a 35% saving for new customers, bringing it to $19.
  • Advanced: $85 per seat, with 20 free Lite seats.
  • Expert: $132 per seat, with 50 free Lite seats.

You need at least one full seat to start on an Intercom plan.

Usage: Fin AI Agent costs $0.99 per outcome on every plan. An outcome is counted when a customer confirms their issue is resolved, when they don't ask for more help after Fin replies, or when Fin completes a workflow (including handing off to a person). You're charged once per conversation, however many questions Fin answers in it. WhatsApp, SMS, phone and email campaigns are billed separately as you use them.

There are optional add-ons too, such as Copilot for your agents ($29 per agent a month billed annually, or $35 monthly) and Pro ($100 a month).

As a rough example, one Essential seat at $29 plus 300 Fin outcomes at $0.99 comes to about $326 a month before any channel charges. That's fair value for a team that would otherwise answer those conversations by hand, but it's a different scale of spending from most small businesses.

Ansa is one fixed price per workspace, with team seats included:

  • Free ($0): 20 answers a month, 1 MB of knowledge, up to 20 website pages per read, 5 documents, just you, 1 assistant.
  • Starter ($25 a month): 500 answers a month, 5 MB of knowledge, up to 100 website pages per read, 20 documents, 3 team seats, 1 assistant.
  • Pro ($89 a month): 2,000 answers a month, 20 MB of knowledge, up to 500 website pages per read, 50 documents, 10 team seats, 3 assistants, and you can remove “Powered by Ansa”.
  • Business ($199 a month): 5,000 answers a month, 50 MB of knowledge, up to 1,000 website pages per read, 200 documents, 25 team seats, 10 assistants, and you can remove “Powered by Ansa”.

Prices are in US dollars, and there are no contracts. See Pricing.

Is there a free plan?

Ansa has a free plan with 20 answers a month and no card needed.

Intercom doesn't have a free plan. It offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card, which includes all features, Fin and add-ons, according to its pricing page.

Which is easier to set up?

Intercom says Fin "can be live with any helpdesk in less than an hour", which is quick for a platform of its size. But Intercom is a whole helpdesk, so most businesses also spend time setting up the inbox, teams, workflows and help centre.

Ansa is smaller, so there's less to set up. You sign up, type your website address, let Ansa read your pages, test a few questions, then paste one line into your website builder or share your chat link. Most businesses are answering customers within ten minutes. See Set up Ansa in 10 minutes.

What happens when you hit the limit?

With Intercom, there isn't a monthly cap on Fin in the same sense. You pay $0.99 for each outcome, so a busy month costs more. That's the point of outcome pricing: you only pay when Fin resolves something.

Ansa works the other way round. Each plan has a hard monthly limit. You get a warning at 80%, and at 100% the assistant pauses politely: the chat bubble is hidden from new visitors, people already chatting are asked to contact you directly, and nothing is deleted. It comes back at the start of next month, or straight away if you upgrade. You're never charged extra. See What happens at your monthly limit.

Which is better depends on you. If missing a question costs you more than paying for it, usage pricing makes sense. If you need to know exactly what you'll pay each month, a hard limit does.

How do they handle questions the AI can't answer?

This is where Intercom is clearly stronger. Fin hands off to your human team with the full conversation, in Intercom's inbox or in another helpdesk such as Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot or Freshdesk. If you have people answering chats all day, that matters a lot.

Ansa doesn't have a live-chat inbox, and it doesn't connect to helpdesks. On Starter, Pro and Business, when it can't help or a customer asks for a person, a quote or a callback, Ansa asks for their email address (and phone number, if you like) and emails you their details with a short summary of the chat. You reply from your own inbox; nothing comes back into the chat. See When Ansa can't help. With hand-off off, it shows your own "don't know" message and a button to reach you. Either way, the question is saved under Unanswered questions, so you can add the answer in one step and Ansa knows it next time. For many small businesses, where the owner answers the phone and WhatsApp anyway, that's all they need.

Which works on WhatsApp?

Both do, priced differently. Intercom lists WhatsApp as pay-as-you-go, charged per conversation and varying by volume and direction.

Ansa answers on your own WhatsApp Business number on Starter, Pro and Business, with no extra Ansa charge: each reply counts as one answer from your plan. Meta bills you directly for WhatsApp messages after its free monthly allowance. See Connect your WhatsApp number and WhatsApp costs.

Who should choose Intercom Fin?

  • Businesses with a support team that works a shared inbox and needs ticketing, routing and reporting.
  • Companies that want an AI agent that hands off to people inside the same tool.
  • Software and online businesses that want in-app messages, product tours and a help centre.
  • Teams already on Zendesk, Salesforce or another helpdesk that want to add Fin without moving (subject to a minimum monthly commitment).
  • Larger or regulated businesses that need features like SSO, SLAs or HIPAA support on the Expert plan.

Who should choose Ansa?

  • Small businesses without a support team, where the owner or a few staff answer customers between other work.
  • Anyone who wants a fixed monthly bill with a hard limit and no per-conversation charges.
  • Businesses that want to start free and only pay $25 a month when they're ready.
  • Shops, salons, restaurants, tour operators and service businesses whose customers mostly ask about prices, hours, delivery and booking. Ansa can take bookings and, on Pro and Business, answer "where is my order?" from Shopify or Stripe.
  • Businesses that answer customers on WhatsApp, or have no website and want a shareable chat link.

FAQ

Is Intercom Fin too expensive for a small business?

It depends on your volume. At the time of writing you pay for at least one seat (from $29 a month billed annually on Essential) plus $0.99 per Fin outcome, so cost rises with every resolved conversation. Ansa's paid plans start at $25 a month, fixed.

Can I use Fin without Intercom's helpdesk?

Yes. Intercom says Fin works with other helpdesks such as Salesforce, at $0.99 per outcome with no seat costs, but a minimum monthly commitment applies.

Does Ansa have a human handoff?

By email, not as a live inbox. On Starter, Pro and Business, Ansa takes the customer's details and emails them to you with a chat summary, and you reply from your own inbox. It also saves the question so you can teach it the answer.

Will Ansa ever charge more than the plan price?

No. Ansa pauses at your monthly limit instead of billing for extra answers. WhatsApp message fees from Meta are separate and billed by Meta.

Does either tool train AI on my data?

Ansa never uses your knowledge or customers' conversations to train AI models. See Your data is never used to train AI.
